MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball earned a 73-57 victory Monday afternoon over the Lake Superior State Lakers. (February 1st).
Northwood is now 12-9 overall, 8-7 in the GLIAC. Lake Superior State falls to 4-17 overall, 3-12 in conference play.
The Lakers took an early 10-6 lead early in the opening quarter. Northwood fought back the rest of the way, eventually taking a 20-18 lead at the break. Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's Mich.) carried the load in the opening quarter, scoring 14 of the Timberwolves' 20 points.
Northwood got their offense going in the second quarter, shooting 53.3 percent (8-15) while going 3-4 from 3-point range. The Timberwolves shot their lead up to 10, 42-32 at half. A big factor in the swing was points off of Laker turnovers, as Northwood held a 12-4 advantage after 20 minutes.
After a slow start in the third quarter, the Timberwolves eventually out-scored the Lakers 17-7 in the third to make the score 59-41 heading to the fourth quarter. After allowing LSSU to have nine offensive rebounds in the opening half, the Lakers had just one offensive board in the third quarter.
Building the lead to at one point 22, the home team cruised to victory in the fourth quarter. Lake Superior State got no closer than 15 in the final quarter.
For the game, Northwood shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field, while Lake Superior State shot 44.2 percent (23-52). A big difference in the contest came from the free throw line, as Northwood went 16 of 21 (76.2 percent) to Lake Superior State's 6-11 (54.5 percent).
The Timberwolves were led by Nurenberg, who finished with another double-double (21 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, two steals). Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) added 19 points, two rebounds, and an assist. Delaney Kenny (Clarkston, Mich.) grabbed had nine points and seven rebounds for the Timberwolves.
Northwood will return to action Thursday night (February 4) for a game against Hillsdale at Riepma Arena. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
