Women's Basketball Falls At Saginaw Valley State 73-68

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a tough 73-68 contest to Saginaw Valley State Saturday night (February 6).

SVSU improves to 16-6 overall, 13-4 in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 13-10 overall, 9-8 in the GLIAC.

The opening half was tight throughout. Northwood led by five late in the first quarter, only to see the Cardinals finish the half strong. SVSU scored the final nine points of the opening half to take a 35-28 at the break. Northwood shot 10-33 from the floor (30.3 percent), compared to SVSU at 13-29 (44.8 percent).

The Timberwolves fought back early in the third quarter, scoring nine of the 11 points of the second half to take the lead back. The remainder of the game was extremely tight – there were four ties and 12 lead changes in the second half alone. Northwood led 54-53 with less than six minutes to go in the game, but the Cardinals responded with 11 points on their next three possessions (three 3-pointers, two free throws) to earn the lead back. SVSU eventually led 67-58 with just over two minutes to go when the Timberwolves fought back. Northwood got the lead down to one at 69-68 with 25 seconds remaining. After a pair of SVSU free throws, NU got a good look at a tying 3-pointer, but it did not fall. The Cardinals then made two more free throws at the other end to clinch the win.

For the game, Northwood shot 37.3 percent (25-67), compared to SVSU at 46.0 percent (23-50). Both teams made seven 3-pointers. The key to the game came at the foul line SVSU went 20-24 (83.3 percent) while NU finished 11-19 (57.9 percent).

Jordyn Nurenberg (St. Johns, Mich.) led the way for Northwood once again, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds for her 17^th double-double of the season. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) had 17 points, while Maddy Seeley (Alma, Mich.) had 13 points off the bench.

Northwood will travel to Ferris State Thursday night (February 11). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
