Women's Basketball Earns 60-49 Road Win Over Wayne State

RECAP: Northwood comes to life with a big fourth quarter in a 60-49 win over Wayne State Thursday night (January 26).

FIRST QUARTER

• The opening quarter was tight throughout – neither team led by more than five points.
• Northwood finished the opening frame strong, scoring the final seven points to open up a 16-11 lead after one.
• Both teams struggled from the floor in the first – NU finished at 30.8 percent (4-13) while WSU was 4-14 (28.6 percent).
• Northwood finished the first quarter with advantages in points off turnovers (5-0), second chance points (3-0) and fast break points (2-0).

SECOND QUARTER

• The defenses continued to control the play in the second quarter, as the two teams combined to score just 15 points while going 6-28 from the floor (21.4 percent).
• Northwood led by as many as nine (22-13), but the Warriors scored six of the final seven points to cut the Timberwolves lead down to 23-19 at the break.
• NU finished the opening half at 26.9 percent overall (7-26) compared to Wayne State at 24.1 percent (7-29). Maddy Seeley went 4-9 from the floor in the half – the rest of Northwood went 3-17 (17.6 percent).

THIRD QUARTER

• Much like the second quarter, Northwood played will in the middle stretch of the third. NU opened up a seven point lead on two occasions.
• Wayne State again responded with a good finish, scoring the final five points of the third to cut the NU lead down to 34-32 heading to the fourth.
• Northwood went 3-12 from the floor in the third (25.0 percent) and 2-8 from 3-point range (25.0 percent).
• Wayne State was 4-15 from the floor (26.7 percent) and 1-4 from 3-point range (25.0 percent).

FOURTH QUARTER

• After struggling for three quarter and entering the fourth shooting just 26.3 percent (10-38), Northwood's offense came to life in the fourth. The Timberwolves went 7-11 from the floor (63.6 percent), 2-5 from 3-point range (40.0 percent) and 10-12 from the foul line (83.3 percent).
• Northwood trailed 44-42 with less than five minutes to go when NU took over, scoring 18 of the final 23 points to earn the win. The run started with back-to-back perimeter jumpers by Zakiya Wells, the last of which was a 3-pointer to put NU up for good at 47-44
• WSU shot 38.5 percent from the floor in the fourth (5-13).

GAME NOTES

• Nurenberg's double-double was her fifth of the season and 29^th of her career.
• Despite Northwood committing three more turnovers than Wayne State 15-12, the Timberwolves out-scored the Warriors 11-1 in points off turnovers in the game.
