Women's Basketball Claims Tough 58-56 Road Win At Michigan Tech

RECAP: Northwood women's basketball earns a dramatic 58-56 road win at Michigan Tech Friday night (January 15).

FIRST QUARTER

• Michigan Tech jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Northwood responded, scoring eight of the next nine points to go up 10-7.
• Neither team led by more than five the remainder of the quarter, which finished with the Timberwolves leading 22-19.
• NU had a strong quarter offensively to start the game, going 9-18 overall (50.0 percent) and 4-7 from 3-point range (57.1 percent)
• MT was 7-16 overall (43.8 percent) and 2-3 from beyond the arc (66.7 percent).
• The Huskies tried all seven of the free throws in the quarter but were just 3-7 on those attempts (42.9 percent).

SECOND QUARTER

• MTU was the better team in the second quarter, holding Northwood scoreless for the first 4:48 of the quarter. That allowed the Huskies to take a 25-22 lead.
• Both offenses were better the remainder of the quarter, which ended with Michigan Tech leading 34-31.
• The Timberwolves struggled shooting in the second, making just 3-17 overall (17.6 percent) and 1-5 from 3-point range (20.0 percent). NU did go 2-2 from the foul line.
• Michigan Tech stepped up to 60.0 percent from the floor (6-10) and 50.0 percent from three (1-2).

THIRD QUARTER

• The score remained close throughout the third as well.
• The Huskies maintained their lead throughout the third, but never by more than five points.
• A pair of late Maizie Taylor 3-pointers cut the MTU lead down to 45-44 heading to the fourth quarter.
• Both teams struggled on offense in the third – NU was 4-18 overall (22.2 percent) compared to MTU at 20.0 percent.
• Things were a little better for both teams from 3-point range, with Northwood finishing 2-5 (40.0 percent) and Michigan Tech making 1-2 (50.0 percent).

FOURTH QUARTER

• The Huskies got the lead to six at 50-44, which was the biggest lead for either team in the game.
• NU responded with seven straight points to go back on top 51-50 with under seven minutes remaining.
• With less than two minutes to go, Makenzie Todd connected on a 3-pointers that put the Timberwolves in the lead at 56-55.
• After MTU split at the foul line, Northwood had the ball as the clock wound down. Senior Ellie Taylor connected on a layup with seven seconds left to give the Timberwolves a 58-56 lead.
• MTU had a chance with the final possession, but the Timberwolves held, giving Northwood the win.
• The defenses continued to be the story in the fourth – Northwood was 5-17 overall (29.4 percent) while Michigan Tech went 3-16 (18.8 percent).

• The win was the first for the women's basketball team at MTU since February 21, 2008. Michigan Tech had won 11 games in a row at home against the Timberwolves prior to tonight.
• This is Northwood's first 3-0 start since the 2011-12 season when the Timberwolves started 4-0. It is NU's first 3-0 start in the GLIAC since the 2000-01 season.
