Women's Basketball Claims 74-46 Road Win At Lake Superior State

RECAP: Riding a school-record performance on offense, the Northwood women's basketball team moved its winning streak to four with a 74-46 road win at Lake Superior State Saturday (January 22).

FIRST QUARTER

  • Northwood struggled on offense to start the game, going 1-11 to start the game from the floor.
  • The Lakers took advantage of NU's slow start, opening up a 11-4 lead to early.
  • Northwood did finish the first quarter strong, scoring seven of the final nine points to make the score 13-11 after one.
  • Northwood ended the first quarter at 20.0 percent, making 4-20 from the floor. The Timberwolves were 1-4 from the 3-point line and 2-4 from the foul line.
  • Lake Superior State ended at the first at 33.3 percent (5-15). The Lakers made 2-7 from 3-point range and were 1-3 at the free throw line.

SECOND QUARTER

  • The Timberwolves kept the momentum going early in the second quarter, pushing their run from the first to 16-2 to go up 20-13.
  • Northwood got the lead up to as many as 14 (33-19) before settling for a 35-23 lead at the break.
  • NU jumped up to 56.3 percent from the floor in the second quarter (9-16). The Timberwolves were 2-6 from 3-point range and 4-5 from the foul line.
  • LSSU fell back to 26.7 percent in the second (4-15). The Lakers were 0-2 from the 3-point line but did make both of their free throws.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Northwood took control of the game in the third quarter.
  • After the Lakers cut the lead to 11 early, Northwood finished the frame by scoring 14 of the final 20 points to push the advantage to 60-35 heading to the fourth.­­
  • The Timberwolves had another strong shooting quarter in the third, going 11-20 from the floor (55.0 percent). NU was 2-3 from 3-point range and 1-2 from the foul line.
  • Lake Superior State was 4-14 from the floor in the third, good for 28.6 percent. The Lakers were 1-6 from the 3-point line and 3-4 from the foul line.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Northwood maintained the lead throughout the final quarter.
  • NU got their advantage up to as many as 33 (70-37) in the final quarter.
  • LSSU got no close than 23 in the final 10 minutes.
  • Northwood fell back with their shooting in the fourth, finishing at 25.0 percent (5-20). NU was 0-6 from 3-point range but did make all four of their free throws.
  • Lake Superior State ended the fourth at 29.4 percent from the floor, making 5-17 overall. The Lakers went 0-5 from the 3-point line and 1-2 from the foul line.

  • Northwood's two turnovers as a team in the game is a new school record for fewest in game. It is also the fewest for any Division II women's basketball team this season, two fewer than anyone else. It matches the lowest for any women's basketball team this season, tying Division I's Boise State, Arkansas and Drexel.
