Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak To Six With 91-81 Road Win At Michigan Tech

SCORE: Northwood Timberwolves 91, Michigan Tech Huskies 81

RECAP: Northwood women's basketball used a record-breaking performance from the three-point line to win their sixth-straight game, claiming a 91-81 road victory at Michigan Tech Thursday afternoon (January 27).

FIRST QUARTER

  • Both offenses came out fast to start the game, but it was the Timberwolves who were the better team early. NU led 19-11 with 4:18 remaining in the quarter.
  • Michigan Tech used an 8-0 run late in the quarter to go up four before the MTU lead stood at 25-23 after 10 minutes.
  • Northwood ended the first quarter at 60.0 percent, making 9-15 overall. NU was 3-4 from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the foul line.
  • Michigan Tech also shot it well in the first, making 64.3 percent overall (9-14). The Huskies were 5-9 from the 3-point line and 2-3 from the foul line.

SECOND QUARTER

  • The Huskies came out strong to start the second quarter, scoring six of the first eight points to take a 31-25 lead.
  • MTU led 34-30 when the Timberwolves responded, scoring 10 straight points to go up 40-34 with 3:28 remaining.
  • Michigan Tech then came back with an 11-2 push to go up 45-42 before Adele Kemp hit a triple for Northwood as time expired to send the game to the break tied 45-45.
  • Both teams continued to shoot the ball well in the second – NU ended at 56.3 percent (9-16) from the floor. The Timberwolves were 4-7 from the 3-point line.
  • Michigan Tech was 8-16 from the floor in the second (50.0 percent). The Huskies were 2-5 from the 3-point line and 2-2 at the foul line..

THIRD QUARTER

  • Northwood's offense continued to roll in the third, putting up their best quarter of the game.
  • NU's lead stood at 60-57 at the under-five minute timeout when the Timberwolves took control.
  • Northwood out-scored the Huskies 17-2  over a span of four minutes to go up by as many as 18 before taking a 77-62 lead at the end of three quarters.
  • The Timberwolves shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the third, going 10-16 overall. NU was 6-10 from 3-point range and 6-6 from the foul line.
  • Michigan Tech fell back to 37.5 percent from the floor in the quarter, making 6-16 overall. MTU was 3-6 from the 3-point line and 2-2 from the foul line.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Northwood kept the momentum going early in the fourth, extending the lead to 19 at 87-68 with 5:53 remaining.
  • NU had its first cold stretch on offense in the game, scoring one point over a 5:31 stretch. The Huskies scored 13 of the 14 points in that stretch to get within seven at 88-81.
  • That run came too late, however, as there were just 31 seconds remaining when MTU got within seven. NU then scored the final three points of the game to earn the win 91-81.
  • The Timberwolves went 4-10 from the floor in the fourth, good for 4-10 percent. NU was 2-4 from 3-point range and 4-10 from the foul line.
  • Michigan Tech shot 46.2 percent in the final quarter, making 6-13 overall. MTU was 3-6 from 3-point range and 4-8 from the foul line.

NORTHWOOD NOTES

  • Northwood's 15 three-point field goals made is a new school record. The old record of 14 was set twice: at Purdue Northwest (1/6/17) and vs. Lawrence Tech (12/21/19)
  • The Timberwolves have now won two of their last three games at Michigan Tech over the last two years. NU had lost 11 straight games prior to last season, with the Timberwolves' last win in Houghton coming February 21, 2008.
  • NU's six-game winning streak is the first for the program since late in the 2010-11 season.
