Women's Basketball Earns 84-66 Senior Day Win Over Malone

RECAP: Northwood women's basketball caps record-breaking regular season with ninth straight victory, defeating Malone 84-66 Saturday (March 2).

GAME STORY

  • The early portion of the game was tightly contested, with Malone leading 13-12 with 3:39 remaining the first quarter.
  • The Northwood offense got red-hot the remainder of the quarter, putting up 12 points in the final 3:22 of the first, capped by a Makenzie Todd 3-pointer at the buzzer. That finished a 12-3 run to finish the quarter and put Northwood on top 24-15 after one.
  • NU led 32-24 with under five minutes remaining in the half when the Timberwolves finished the second quarter strong as well. Northwood scored 11 straight points to go up 43-26.
  • The Timberwolves led by as many as 19 before standing with a 50-32 lead at halftime.
  • Northwood got the lead to 53-32 when the Pioneers fought back, scoring seven straight to get within 14 at 53-39.
  • NU responded right away, scoring the next 12 points to take a 65-39 lead with under four minutes remaining in the third.
  • The lead grew to as many as 31 (76-45) before the Northwood lead was 76-48 heading to the final period.
  • Malone played better in the fourth but got no closer than 17.

NORTHWOOD NOTES

  • The Timberwolves have now won nine straight and 12 of their last 13 games.
  • Northwood has now set the program record for Division II wins in a season with 20. The 2008-09 team won 19 Division II games (21 overall).
  • Northwood's 11 3-pointers in the game gives them 232 on the season, setting a program record for most triples in a season. The old record of 227 was set during the 2017-18 season.
  • Taylor's 5-5 performance from 3-point range ties the school record for most 3-pointers made in a game without a miss. Jenna Anastos also went 5-5 from 3-point range December 19, 2009.
  • NU's nine-game winning streak is the longest for Northwood in 33 years. The 1990-91 team had a 10-game streak late in the season.

  • Northwood, which finished the regular season tied for second in the G-MAC standings, has earned the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference tournament. The Timberwolves will take on sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene Tuesday (March 5) at 6 p.m. Trevecca was ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA Midwest Regional rankings, while Northwood was ninth. Eight teams will earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
