Women's Basketball Drops Tough 81-79 Overtime Game To Trevecca Nazarene In G-MAC Quarterfinals

RECAP: Third-seeded Northwood women's basketball loses a hard-fought 81-79 overtime contest to No. 6 seed Trevecca Nazarene Tuesday night (March 5).

GAME STORY

  • Trevecca started the game fast, putting up 11 of the first 13 points of the contest for an early nine-point lead.
  • Northwood settled down and got into the game, eventually tying the score 16-16 before holding a 19-16 lead after one.
  • The game remained tight throughout the second quarter, as the largest lead for either team was four points.
  • NU scored nine of the final 13 points to take a 36-35 lead to halftime.
  • While the score remained close, the Timberwolves led for the majority of the third quarter. Northwood stood with a 58-54 lead heading to the fourth.
  • The Timberwolves started the fourth quarter strong, scoring the first seven points to take the biggest lead of the game at 65-54 with 7:23 remaining.
  • That is when TNU got going on offense and defense, as the Trojans scored 12 straight points while holding Northwood scoreless for nearly five minutes. That put Trevecca back on top 66-65.
  • TNU's run eventually reached 17-2 to give them a 71-67 lead with 1:30 remaining when Northwood responded. Alli Keyser connected on a 3-pointer to get NU within one. After a defensive stop, Jayla Strickland got fouled with six seconds remaining down by two. Her first free throw was good but her second attempts spun out, sending the game to overtime.
  • As was the entire game, overtime was extremely closely contested, as the largest lead for either team was two points.
  • The score was tied 74-74, 77-77 and 79-79 before a pair of Trevecca free throws with eight seconds remaining gave the Trojans an 81-79 lead.
  • Northwood got a good look at the rim in the final second but was unable to convert, giving the win to the Trojans.
