Women's Soccer Defeats Walsh 2-1

The Northwood University women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2012 season with a 2-1 victory over Walsh Friday afternoon (September 14).

Northwood is now 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the GLIAC. Walsh falls to 3-1 overall, 0-1 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves came out strong early and was rewarded with a goal in the seventh minute. Alyssa Tomassi (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) had a big strike from just outside the box that beat the keeper to go up 1-0. The score remained 1-0 until halftime. Northwood held a 10-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

NU extended their lead in the 64th minute, when senior Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) made history. Her second goal of the season was the 46th of her career, breaking the old record of 45 held by Amy Snyder. Madison Pines (Troy, Mich.) picked up the assist, which put Northwood up 2-0.

Walsh got on the board in the 90th minute, scoring a goal to with 57 seconds remaining in th game. But the Northwood defense held in the final moments, giving them the victory.

For the game, Northwood finished with a 16-6 advantage in total shots. Both teams finished with a pair of corners.

The Timberwolves will host Malone Sunday September 16. Match time is set for Noon.
