Women's Soccer Falls To Davenport 4-1

The Northwood University women's soccer team opened their 2013 season with a 4-1 loss to Davenport Wednesday night (September 11).

Davenport improves to 5-1 on the season with the victory.

The Panthers dominated the first half, netting three goals by Mackenzie VanDerWarf, Letesha Connonier and Lizzie Paul, respectively. The Panthers out-shot the Timberwolves 11-3 in the first half, holding Northwood scoreless at the break.

Davenport extended their lead on another goal from Paul six minutes into the second half. Northwood got onto the scoreboard late into the second half on a goal from freshman, Jessica Flores (Tujunga, Calif./Verdugo Hills). Her first career goal came in the 74th minute after driving down the left side of the field and beating the goalie to the upper right corner.

For the match, Davenport finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots. The Panthers also totaled 12 fouls, to Northwood's five. Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Shields (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) saved a breakaway, to go along with three other saves for the Timberwolves in the second half.

Northwood will host rival Saginaw Valley State on Friday (September 13) for a non-conference game. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
