Women's Soccer Downs St. Joseph's 4-0 In Home Opener

The Northwood University women's soccer team defeated Saint Joseph's 4-0 in the 2014 home Sunday afternoon (September 7).

The Timberwolves are now 1-1 on the season, while the Pumas fall to 0-2.

Freshman, Sara Lamphere (Goodrich, Mich.) made the first home game of her career a memorable one. She netted her first goal of the day at 14:48 on an assist from Jessica Esser (Utica, Mich. / Eisenhower) through the middle. Lamphere set herself just at the top of the 18-yard box and finished over the keeper's head to give the Timberwolves a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Shortly into the second period, Esser recorded her first goal of the season on a rebound from just within the 18-yard box. She fired a rocket into the back of the net at 55:13 to put the Timberwolves ahead 2-0. Lamphere scored her second goal on a beautiful shot from about 25 yards out on the right side. On a ball put through by Carly Whitson (Utica, Mich. / Eisenhower), Lamphere lifted the shot across the field to beat the keeper over her far shoulder (62:34). Capping off the hat trick, Sara Lamphere finished the game with her final goal just outside the six-yard box on a rebound from a corner kick at 89:05.

For the match, Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (16-14) but NU recorded more corner kicks (5-4). Esser finished with three shots, one assist and a goal on the day. Lamphere finished three goals on six shots for her first career hat trick. Samantha Cook (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon East) recorded the third shutout of her career with nine saves.
