Women's Soccer Falls To Madonna 2-1

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to Madonna Monday afternoon (September 15).

The Timberwolves are now 1-2 on the season. Madonna improves to 3-1 with the win.

All three goals in the game came off miscues on the back line by defenders and their keepers. The opening goal was scored by Madonna on a ball loose in the box that the Timberwolves failed to clear. That came in the 32nd minute, putting the Crusaders up 1-0.

Northwood responded with a goal in the closing moments of the opening half on a similar play to the Madonna goal. Freshman Kayla Trevino (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty-Benton) picked up a loose ball in the area and found the back of the net to tie the game in the 44th minute.

That is how the score would remain at halftime. Neither team put together much offense in the half, with the two teams combining for just seven shots (Madonna – 4, Northwood – 3).

Northwood controlled the play for the second half, out-shooting the Crusaders 11-1 after the break. But that one shot proved to give Madonna the win. A long ball fed towards the Northwood goal could not be tracked down by anyone from Northwood, giving Madonna a wide open net and the game winner in the 85th minute.

For the match, Northwood finished with a 14-5 edge in shots on goal and 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Northwood will host Concordia Friday afternoon (September 19). The game will get under way at 3 p.m.
