MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's soccer team's late comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss to Lake Erie Friday afternoon (October 3).
Northwood falls to 1-6-1 overall, 0-4-0 in the GLIAC. Lake Erie improves to 5-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 in the GLIAC.
The Storm netted goals in the 14th and the 40th minute to go up 2-0 heading to halftime. Lake Erie finished the half with an 8-3 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Lake Erie extended their lead to 3-0 just over 10 minutes into the second half, which is where the score would remain until the final minutes. Northwood got on the board in the 85th minute off a rebound, which was put home by Jessica Kalbfleisch (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West) to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Timberwolves then made things interesting in the 88th minute, as Carly Whitson (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower) took a feed from Jessica Flores (Tujunga, Calif./Verdugo Hills) and beat the keeper, putting Northwood within one at 3-2. But that is as close as the Timberwolves would get, giving Lake Erie the win.
For the game, Lake Erie finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
Northwood will host Ashland Sunday (October 5). Game time is set for Noon.
