Women's Soccer Earns 3-2 Win Over Walsh In Home-Opener

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's soccer team earned a 3-2 win over Walsh University for the 2015 home-opener at Dean Field on Friday (Sept. 18).

The Timberwolves improves to 1-2-1 on the year, 1-0 in the GLIAC. The Cavaliers are now 2-2-2 overall, 0-1 in the GLIAC.

NU was the first to get on the board on an unassisted shot by Jessica Flores (San Diego, Calif. / Verdugo Hills). Flores won a ball from nearly 40 yards out, turned and lifted the shot above the keeper into the back of the net just under two minutes into the game. Walsh, however, responded in the 23rd minute with the equalizer. The opening period was very even, with both teams taking four shots and each earning a single corner kick.

WU maintained possession for a majority of the second half, but NU's Flores put the Timberwolves ahead 2-1 with her second goal of the match at 70:05. Junior Savannah King (Lapeer, Mich. / West) pushed the ball to the goal line on the right side before putting a cross through to Flores, who was waiting on the far side of the net. Less than four minutes later, Jessica Langer (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) placed a corner kick into the box where Sara Lamphere (Goodrich, Mich. / Goodrich) got a touch on the pass before defender Jessica Esser (Utica, Mich. / Eisenhower) finished the ball for her first goal of the season. The Cavaliers responded at 81:28 with a shot over the head of keeper Julie Shields (Berkley, Mich. / Berkley), cutting NU's lead 3-2. Northwood was able to play out the clock for the win.

For the match, Walsh finished with 10 shots to NU's eight. Northwood was able to generate more corner kicks (4-2) and was the more aggressive teams with 15 fouls, to seven for WU. Shields earned her first win on the year with six saves.
