Women's Soccer Falls 2-1 At Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MICH> – The Northwood University women's soccer team falls 2-1 at Michigan Tech on Friday (October 23).

The Timberwolves fall 5-7-1 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC. The Huskies improve to 8-5-1 on the year, 5-4-1 in the GLIAC.

Neither team was able to generate much offense to open the match, as the first shot wasn't taken until the 11th minute. MTU responded with four shots and a corner kick in the following seven minutes before the Huskies found the back of the net to lead 1-0 at 18:10. NU responded quickly with a goal of their own to tie the match 1-1 less than a minute later. Northwood's Sara Lamphere (Goodrich, Mich.) registered her third goal of the season on an assist from Carly Whitson (Utica, Mich. / Eisenhower) at 19:06. Despite NU's goalkeeper, Julie Shields (Berkley, Mich. / Berkley), making three saves the Huskies netted what would end up being the game-winning goal in the 41st minute.

For the half, MTU maintained an advantage in shots (11-3) and registered the sole corner kick. The Huskies continued with the offensive threat in the second half, as the Timberwolves defended seven shots and four corner kicks. For the match, Michigan Tech out-shot Northwood 18-4. Shields finished with eight saves in the loss.

The Timberwolves continue their U.P. trip on Sunday (October 25), taking on Northern Mich. at Noon.
