Women's Soccer Loses 1-0 To Saginaw Valley State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's soccer team falls 1-0 to Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon (October 30) to close out the regular season.

This was the final match at Dean Field for the following Northwood seniors: Julie Shields (Berkley, Mich. / Berkley), Jessica Langer (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview), McKenzie Gohn (Comstock Park, Mich. / Comstock Park) and Kristen Riley (Wyoming, Mich. / Grandville).

Northwood finishes the regular season with a 6-8-1 record, 6-6 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals end the year at 6-10 overall, 4-8 in the GLIAC.

The first half was plagued with misplays and not a lot of offense, as the weather seemed to become a factor at Dean Field. Northwood was able to register nine shots in the opening period but neither team found the back of the net.

Inclement weather continued throughout the second half, as both teams struggled to generate much offense. The Cardinals capitalized on a corner kick in the 86th minute to pull ahead 1-0. The Timberwolves tallied three shots in the last four minutes but were unable to net the equalizer.

For the match, NU maintained the advantage in shots (19-11) and corner kicks (4-3). Shields finished with seven saves, while Jessica Langer and Jessica Flores (San Diego, Calif. / Verdugo Hills) each registered a pair of shots.

The # 7 Timberwolves will travel to #2 Ferris State for the first match of the GLIAC Tournament. The match will be held at Big Rapids High School and is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (November 3). The winner of that match will advance to the Semifinals against the winner of #3 Ashland and #6 Michigan Tech on Friday (November 6).
