Women's Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 1-0 Defeat at #3 Grand Valley

OVERVIEW – #3 GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY 

SCORE: GVSU Lakers 1, Northwood Timberwolves 0 

RECORDS: Northwood 1-3Grand Valley 5-0 

LOCATION:GVSU Soccer Field – Allendale, Mich. 

RECAP:The Timberwolves held the third ranked Lakers scoreless until the 68th minute when a Riko Sagara free kick deflected into the back of the net. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Grand Valley held most of the possession in the opening 45 minutes, as Bridget Adams saved both Laker shots on goal. 

  • Northwood's Ashton Brooks would manage a shot on a counter in the 31st minute, but her attempt was blocked by a Laker defender. 

  • The second half was much of the same as a tough Timberwolf defense held the Lakers to just one shot on frame in the latter 45. 

  • The lone GVSU goal came in the 68th minute when the hosts were given an indirect kick 15 yards from goal after Adams handled a passback from a teammate.  The ensuing kick deflected off of a pair of bodies inside the six yard box before finding the back of the net.

  • Despite both teams competing in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, tonight's match was a non-conference match and will not count towards the GLIAC standings. 

  • Tonight's match was the first of four matchups against teams featured in the D2 national rankings in the next 16 days for the Timberwolves.

  • Northwood will make the short trek to University Center, Mich. On Sunday (September 16th) to face off with 13th ranked Saginaw Valley for a 12:00 pm kickoff.
