Women's Soccer Jumps Into The Nine Spot Of The United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional Poll

MIDLAND, MICH. - The Northwood women's soccer team jumped into the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Midwest regional rankings this week. The Timberwolves (3-1-2, 2-0-1) come in ranked ninth as of the USC's third poll released Tuesday (September 20).

Grand Valley State (5-1-2) is ranked No. 1 followed by No. 2 McKendree (5-0-2) and No. 3 Northern Michigan (7-0-1) to round out the top three. Previously unranked, Northwood's wins over Cedarville (2-0) and Ohio Dominican (5-2) last week catapulted them up the rankings board. 

Early in the season, Northwood is scoring 2.1 goals a game which ranks second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. NU has scored 15 goals this season and only giving up nine over the first six games. Abbie Fowler (Midland, Mich.) and Brooke Honeycutt (Trenton, Mich.) lead the blue and white with three goals each.   

The first official NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings will be rolled out later this season. 

56 teams will qualify for this year's NCAA Tournament, with the top seven teams from the Midwest Region earning a berth. Postseason action of the NCAA tournament will begin on November 10-13 with the first and second rounds on 16 different campuses across the United States.

In regions with seven berths such as the Midwest, the No. 2 seed will play the No. 7 seed in the first round. In regions with eight berths, the first-round matchups will be the No. 1 seed vs. No. 8 seed and No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed. The two top-seeded teams in each region shall be offered the opportunity to host, provided minimum site selection criteria are met and a bid has been submitted.
