Women's Tennis Defeats Grand Valley State 5-3 In NCAA Tournament Opening Round

DETROIT, MICH. – The Northwood University women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 5-3 win over Grand Valley State Saturday (May 2).

Northwood, the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region, improves to 17-2 with the win. GVSU, the fifth seed, ends the season at 22-6.

The Timberwolves picked up two quick wins in doubles at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to go up 2-0. GVSU then picked up a hard-fought win in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 position to cut the NU advantage down to 2-1 heading to singles.

In singles, the Timberwolves picked up a pair of quick wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions to go up 4-1. The Lakers then picked up a pair of three-set victories at No. 3 and No. 6 to cut the lead to 4-3. Senior Anastasia Puchkina then closed out the match with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win for the Timberwolves.

Anastasiia Kazub led the way for Northwood on the day, going 2-0.

The Timberwolves now advance to the round of 32 and will face top-seeded Wayne State. That match is  Sunday (May 3) at 1 p.m.
