Women's Tennis Defeats Wayne State 5-2 In Second Round Of The NCAA Tournament

DETROIT, MICH. – The Northwood University women's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 5-2 win over Wayne State Sunday afternoon (May 3).

Northwood, the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region, is now 19-2 on the season. Top-seeded Wayne State ends its year at 24-7.

The win avenges a pair of tough losses over the last year for Northwood against Wayne State. The Warriors beat NU in Midland in this round of the NCAA Tournament to end the 2014 season for the Timberwolves. WSU also beat Northwood 5-4 in the fall, giving the Warriors the GLIAC Championship.

Northwood got off to a fast start in doubles, winning at the No. 3 (8-3) and No. 2 positions (8-5) to open up a 2-0 lead. NU nearly took a 3-0 lead into singles, but WSU won the No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker 9-8 (6) to make the score 2-1.

Wayne State leveled the match with a win at No. 1 singles, but it was all Northwood after that. The Timberwolves picked up wins at the bottom three positions, capped by a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position by Anna Aniskina to clinch the win.

On the day, Aniskina, Margarita Asatryan and Anastasiia Kazub all went 2-0 to lead the way for Northwood.

Northwood now advances to the Round of 16 in Surprise, Arizona May 13-16.
