Women's Tennis Win GLIAC Tournament - Defeats Grand Valley State 5-2

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's tennis team claimed the GLIAC Tournament Championship with a 5-2 win over Grand Valley State Sunday morning (October 25).

Northwood finishes the fall season with a 13-1 record. Grand Valley State stands at 13-2.

The Timberwolves, who lost to Grand Valley State 6-3 in the regular season, picked up two wins in doubles. The duo of Carol Arnez-Mercado and Anna Aniskina earned an 8-6 win at the No. 1 position, while Olesia Riabchuk and Anastasiia Kazub posted an 8-5 win at the No. 3 match. GVSU took the No. 2 match, sending the contest to singles with Northwood leading 2-1. In the meeting during the regular season, the Lakers held a 3-0 lead after doubles.

NU came out strong in singles as well, as Kazub and Aniskina each earned quick straight-set wins to put the Timberwolves within one point of the championship at 4-1. The Lakers earned a win at the No. 2 position, but Northwood finished off the match with the next results. Tetyana Pavych claimed a three-set win at the No. 6 match, giving the Timberwolves the title.

With the win, Northwood earns the GLIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will take place next spring.
