Track and Field Competes at GLIAC Championships; Arnouts, Gharsalli Earn First Place Honors

OVERVIEW: MEN'S AND WOMEN'S  GLIAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS   

EVENT: GLIAC Championships   

LOCATION: Grand Valley State University. Allendale, Michigan

RECAP: The Northwood University track and field teams competed at the Outdoor GLIAC Championships with the women placing 11th out of 15 teams and the men claiming the 6th place finish out of 13 teams. Northwood's Rami Gharsalli captured the title in the men's 60 meter hurdles while Maddison Arnouts claimed the gold in the women's 400 meter hurdles.

INSIDE THE MEET

  • The Northwood University Outdoor Track and Field teams concluded conference competition as the Timberwolves competed at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships at Grand Valley State University.
  • The Northwood women's team completed the conference meet in 11th place out of 15 schools with 21.5 points, 13.5 more points than last year. The men's Track and Field team finished in sixth place at the event with 37 points consisting of 13 teams, improving eight places and 30 points from a year ago.
  • Madison Arnouts captured a GLIAC championship in the women's 400 meter hurdles with her time of 60.65. The time marks the best of the season by 1.05 seconds as well as her first career GLIAC championship. Additionally, Arnouts registered an NCAA provisional mark and is now 17th in the country after her first place finish at the GLIAC Championships. Last but certainly not least, Arnouts was named first team All-GLIAC in the women's 400 meter hurdles.
  • Rami Gharsalli claimed first place and a gold medal in the men's 110 hurdle event with a time of 13.98. Gharsalli moves up to #6 in the NCAA and was also named first team All-GLIAC in the men's 110 meter hurdles for his accomplishment.
  • In the women's long jump event, Elaina Meadows made her way to the podium with a second place finish overall with her jump of 5.78m. The leap is an NCAA provisional mark.
  • In the men's 4x100 meter relay, the Timberwolve's team of Rayvaun Tyler, Colby Brundige, Dwight Blakey, and Rami Gharsalli grabbed a fourth place finish with a time of 42.21. 
  • In the men's hammer throw, Paul Evans finished fourth overall with a provisional mark of 62.45m. The toss broke Evan's own school record by 2.46 meters and is now fifth overall in the entire NCAA. He came back the next day to place 7th in the discus throw.
  • Heaven Powell completed a jump of 1.60m in the women's high jump to earn a fourth place finish overall in the event. 
  • Kyle Vandersyde placed 8th in 110 hurdles and improved upon his eighth best time in school history with a time 15.16.
  • Colby Brundige scored points for the Timberwolves in both the 100 and 200 meter races for NU. Brundige placed 7th in the 100 with a time of 10.72 and 6th in the 200 with a time of 21.66, both of which is #6 in school history. 
  • Tyler Jensen displayed incredible stamina throughout the event as he placed 5th in the men's 10k on Thursday and came back on Friday to score 8th in the 5k event. Of all competitors, only three men even attempted both the 10k/5k double. Furthermore, Tyler was one of only two to score in both events.
  • Ben Quella placed 5th in the javelin throw with a toss of 48.39m.
  • Jennifer McKenna placed 9th in both the 1500 and the 800, improving on her third best mark in school history in the 800 with a time of 2:16.17.

Everyone was able to contribute and we came together as a full team and we fought because we believed in ourselves."
