New Faces Highlight Track & Field's Opening to 2022-23 Indoor Season

OVERVIEW 

MEET: HOLIDAY OPEN

LOCATION: ALLENDALE, MICHIGAN – GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY

RECAP: Northwood track & field opened the indoor season Friday (December 9) at the Holiday Open hosted by Grand Valley State. Many new faces and changes to the history books occurred as the Timberwolves embark on a new season.

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • Jon Kelm stood atop the long jump podium after his 6.93m jump. Kelm moves into seventh all-time in the Northwood history books.
  • Sebastian Tesch took gold as well for NU, earning a weight throw gold with a 16.72m toss setting a new personal record (PR) and moving into ninth on the all-time Northwood list.
  • In his first race of the season, Xzavia Price clocked a 6.89 60m dash. His time was a third of a second off the NCAA provisional mark as he placed sixth in the field. Price earned a finals berth with a 6.90 finish in prelims out of 64 runners.
  • Zane Aldrich ran a 14:36.04 5K to finish fourth in the men's race.
  • Finishing out cross country this past week at Northwood, Carson Laney (14:52.00) moved into fifth place in school history for the 5k with his 13-second PR in heat three of the prelims.
  • Newcomers Sam Smith (15:07.00 – 5K) and Blake Vier (8.69 – 60m hurdles) each moved into Northwood's top 10 of their respective events. Smith moved into 10th while Vier moved up to eighth with their new PRs.
  • Josh Jones represented the Timberwolves with a 4:12.47 mile during the mile invite, which moves him into fourth in NU history and improves his PR by four seconds.
  • Lefty Will Nemecek (15.89m) and Travis Schepers (15.32m) returned to the shot put circle for the Timberwolves, earning fourth and fifth-place finishes in the shot put invite.
  • Nicholas Ball threw in his first collegiate action, placing second in the shot with a 13.81m toss.

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Newcomer Lillian Albaugh took home gold in the shot with a 13.51m final throw that propelled her into third in NU history. She also moved in ninth all-time with her 12.95m weight throw toss in her first action as a Timberwolf.
  • Northwood had two women move into Northwood's top seven in the 60m hurdles, Gabby Jones (9.76) moved into a tie for third while Jenna Gaul (10.27) is now seventh.
  • Alexis Kaanta jumped 9.78m in the triple jump.
  • Shannon McMenamin hit the 10-meter mark in her first collegiate action hitting 10.46m in the shot put.
  • Northwood had four women compete in the 60m prelims; Molly Kitson (8.32), Hailey Granata (8.43), and newcomers Brooke Berney (8.54) and Rebecca Hoonhorst (8.94).

  • Northwood track & field will be back next year on January 14, 2023, to compete at the Michigan Invitational and Bob Eubanks Open.
