Volleyball Falls 3-1 To Indianapolis In NCAA Tournament

The Northwood University volleyball team saw its 2013 season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Indianapolis in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday (December 5). Set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 13-25, 25-21.

Northwood ends the year 21-11 overall. Indianapolis improves to 25-9 with the win.

With UINDY leading 9-8 in the first set, a 6-0 run by Greyhounds was key to them earning a 1-0 lead.  Indianapolis hit .464 (16-3-28) in the set while the Timberwolves finished at .114 (7-3-35).

The second was tighter than the first, but errors by the Northwood offense gave the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead. The Timberwolves finished with a 15-14 edge in kills for the set, but committed seven more errors than the Greyhounds (11-4). NU trailed 22-16 but fought back to get the score to 24-22 before dropping the set.

Northwood jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set and would never trail. NU finished the set strong as well, scoring nine of the final 11 points to make the overall score 2-1. Northwood hit .278 in the frame (13-3-36) while holding UINDY to a -.062 (8-10-32).

The fourth set saw both teams hit well offensively – the Greyhounds hit .293 (14-2-41) while the Timberwolves finished at .250 (18-6-48). The score was tied 19-19 when UINDY scored four of the next five points to earn the match.

Overall, Northwood finished with a .180 attack percentage (53-23-167) while Indianapolis finished at .234 (52-19-141). The Greyhounds finished with a 78-63 edge in digs while both teams totaled 11 blocks.

Leading the way for Northwood was senior Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine), who finished with a match-high 26 kills. She hit .232 and also added two aces and 11 digs. Krysta Kramer (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) had 10 kills and 15 digs.

The match was the final contest for five Northwood seniors: Pakhomenko, Jordan Dunn (Bowling Green, Ohio), Kristin Perschon (Schaumburg, Ill./Contant), Elizabeth Barker (Williamsburg, Ind./Northeastern) and Ally Hoomaian (Novi, Mich.).
