Volleyball Falls In Five To Ohio Dominican

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 match to Ohio Dominican Friday night (October 9). Set scores were 21-25, 13-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-9.

Northwood falls to 5-11 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican improves to 8-9 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves came out strong in the opening two sets, finishing with a 33-17 advantage in kills en route to a 2-0 lead. ODU hit .080 (5-3-25) in the second set while Northwood ended up at .323 (16-6-31).

While Northwood's offense remained consistent over the next two sets, Ohio Dominican's attack came to life. ODU hit .306 in the third (14-3-36) and followed it up with a .400 clip in the fourth (18-2-40). Northwood had nearly identical numbers in the third (.256 – 17-6-43) and the fourth (.262 – 17-6-42). The Panthers pulled out both hard-fought sets late, taking the third 25-23 and the fourth 26-24.

ODU continued to roll offensively in the fifth, hitting .643 in the set. The Panthers made one error and registered 10 kills on 14 attempts. The set was tied 6-6 when Ohio Dominican rattled off six of the next seven points to put the match away.

Overall, Northwood finished with big advantages in kills (74-59), aces (6-2) and points (81-71). But the Panthers made 18 fewer attack errors (29-11) and out-blocked Northwood 10-1 overall.  ODU ended up with a .329 attack percentage (59-11-146) while NU hit .262 (74-29-172).

Freshman Colleen Mayer (Troy, Mich./Avondale) led the Northwood offense with a career-day. She had a match-high 20 kills while hitting .516 (20-4-31). Chelsea Watson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Niagara U.) also registered a career-high in kills, finishing with 19 and a .412 attack percentage (19-5-34). Setter Taylor Pritchett (Apex, N.C.) had 64 assists and four aces.

Northwood will host Tiffin Saturday afternoon (October 9). First serve is set for 5 p.m.
