Volleyball Falls 3-0 To Wayne State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Wayne State Friday night (October 30). Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 27-25.

Northwood falls to 10-13 overall, 6-6 in the GLIAC. Wayne State improves to 10-14 overall, 5-7 in the GLIAC.

The Warriors led the opening set 15-14 when WSU took control to earn the early advantage. Wayne State scored 10 of the final 15 points, capped by a 4-2 run to finish. WSU hit .265 (16-7-34) while NU ended up at .040 (7-6-25).

Northwood held an early three-point lead in the second set and was up 20-19 late before a strong WSU finish. The set was tied 22-22 when the Warriors claimed the final three points to take a 2-0 lead.  Both teams hit well in the frame – NU ended up at .343 (16-4-25) while WSU finished up at .270 (14-4-37).

The Timberwolves trailed 24-22 in the final set, but responded by scoring three of the next four points to level the score at 25-25. But the Warriors bounced back one final time, scoring the final two points to earn the victory. Neither team hit well in the third – WSU ended up at .109 (16-11-46) while NU finished at .095 (9-5-42).

For the match, Northwood ended up hitting .167 (32-15-102) while Wayne State finished at .205 (46-22-117). The Warriors finished with a 9-7 edge in blocks and a 49-38 advantage in digs. Serving also proved to be a big part of the match, as NU had one ace and seven errors while WSU had four aces and five errors.

Colleen Mayer (Troy, Mich./Avondale) and Allison Getty (Wayland, Mich.) led Northwood with seven kills each. Mayer added three blocks as well.

Northwood returns home Saturday (October 31) for a match against Saginaw Valley State. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
