Volleyball Goes 2-0 On Opening Day of Mizuno Midwest Region Crossover

OVERVIEW – SOUTHERN INDIANA

INSIDE THE MATCH

  • Northwood took control of the opening set about midway through the frame. With the Timberwolves on top 14-13, Northwood scored seven of the next eight points to open up a 21-14 lead. The Screaming Eagles chipped away at the lead but the Timberwolves earned the opening set 25-19.
  • The Timberwolves took the lead for good in the second set at 6-5. Northwood opened up leads of 10-7, 12-8 and 19-13. USI made another late push to get within two points late, but Northwood took the set by a matching score of 25-19 to go up 2-0.
  • Southern Indiana led throughout the third set and controlled the play. Once the Panthers went up 8-5, Northwood got no closer than three points the rest of the frame to win 25-14 to earn a 2-1 lead.
  • The Screaming Eagles played their best set of the match in the third, eventually leading 20-18 late in the third. But the Timberwolves finished the match strong, scoring seven of the final eight points to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0

SCORE: Northwood 3, Saint Joseph's 2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-13)

RECORDS: Northwood (11-7), Saint Joseph's (4-16)

LOCATION: Great Lakes Volleyball Center – Aurora, Ill.

RECAP: Northwood rallied from a 0-2 deficit to earn a 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's to complete a 2-0 day at the Mizuno Midwest Region crossover.

INSIDE THE MATCH

  • Northwood swept Saint Joseph's earlier this season at the Wayne State Tournament, but it was the Pumas who came out strong in the opening set. They took the lead for good at 5-4 in the frame and went on to post a 25-19 victory to go up 1-0.
  • Northwood's serving in the second set let them down, sending them to a 0-2 hole. NU trailed 20-14 before getting within two points at 22-20. But the Timberwolves had two serving errors in SJC's final four points to take the set. The Timberwolves had seven service errors in a set which they lost by three points (25-22).
  • Northwood began their comeback with a fast start in the third set. NU scored the first four points and eventually registered nine of the first 12 points. Saint Joseph's got no closer than four points after that and NU eventually took the set 25-18 to cut the lead down to 2-1.
  • With the score 3-3 in the fourth set, Northwood posted seven of the next eight points to go up 10-4. Saint Joseph's cut the lead down to 14-11, but the Timberwolves scored eight of the next nine points to go up 22-12. NU took the set 25-22 to level the match 2-2.
  • The final set was tight throughout – neither team led by more than two points. Saint Joseph's was serving with a 13-12 lead, but Northwood finished strong, claiming the final three points to win 15-13 and take the match 3-2.
