Volleyball Posts 3-0 Sweep Over Grand Valley State

OVERVIEW – GRAND VALLEY

SCORE: Northwood Timberwolves 3, Grand Valley State Lakers 0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-20)

RECAP:  Northwood posts fourth-straight win in sweep over Grand Valley State Saturday (October 7).

INSIDE THE MATCH

  • Northwood jumped out to a 7-1 lead out of the gate in the first set, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Grand Valley State would score five of the next seven points to cut the lead to three, but the Timberwolves responded with 16 of the next 25 points to capture the first set. NU hit .333 (14-3-33) while GVSU finished at .000 (9-9-39)
  • The beginning of the second set offered more of a back-and-forth environment with both teams splitting the first eight points. From there, Northwood appeared to take control with a 10-3 run to make it 14-7. NU eventually led 20-13, but Grand Valley did not give in, fighting back to take the lead at 24-23. The Lakers had three set points but were unable to close out the frame. On their second set point, Northwood closed the set out 29-27. Both offenses struggled in the second - Northwood finished at .043 (10-8-47) compared to Grand Valley's .020 (15-14-49). 
  • Taking an early 12-6 lead in the third set, the Timberwolves again looked like they were in control. While Grand Valley would again make it a set with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 18-15, Northwood eventually sealed the deal with seven of the next 12 points to complete the sweep. The Timberwolves hit .283 (19-6-46) while the Lakers finished at .152 (10-3-46).

  • Northwood beat Grand Valley for the first time since November 18th, 2012 in the GLIAC Tournament Championship. GVSU had won seven straight over NU.
  • After five consecutive losses that included three sweeps from September 15th-23rd, Northwood has won four consecutive matches with three straight set sweeps of their own.
