RECAP: Northwood Volleyball opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep at rival Saginaw Valley Friday night (September 17).

INSIDE THE MATCH

SVSU led the majority of the opening set, holding advantages of 6-2, 12-7 and 17-12. But the Timberwolves fought back late, scoring 13 of the final 17 points to take the opener 25-21. Northwood ended the first set hitting .147 (11-6-34) while SVSU was at .176 (12-6-34).
The second set was much closer through the middle portion of the set, as the first four point lead came with the Timberwolves up 16-12. SVSU came back to take the lead at 19-18, only to see the Northwood finish strong once again. NU scored six of the final nine points to take the second set 25-23. Both teams struggled hitting in the second – the Timberwolves fell back to .075 while the Cardinals hit .047 (9-7-43)
The Timberwolves started strong in the final set, leading 3-0, 6-3 and 14-9. SVSU slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually taking the lead 22-21. But Northwood responded one final time, scoring the final four points of the match to win 25-22 and complete the sweep. NU jumped up to hitting .213 in the third (19-9-47), compared to SVSU at .135 (9-4-37).
