Volleyball Drops Pair At Midwest Crossover

OVERVIEW – QUINCY/WALSH

RECAP: Volleyball a pair of matches at the Midwest Region Crossover Friday afternoon (October 15), falling to Quincy 3-1 before falling to Walsh 3-0.

INSIDE THE MATCH 

  • The Timberwolves held the early advantage in the opening set, going up 10-5. The Hawks came back and appeared to be ready to take the opening set, leading 22-17. NU responded with a big run to earn a comeback win, scoring seven straight points and eight of the final nine to win 25-23. Northwood hit .250 in the opening set (16-5-44), while Quincy finished at .186 (15-7-43).
  • Set two was evenly played throughout and was tied 17-17. Quincy led 23-22 before scoring the final two points of the set to level the match 1-1. The Hawks ended the second set at .211 (14-6-38). Northwood fell back to .184 (14-7-38).
  • Northwood started well in the third, scoring four of the first five points. The Hawks responded with five of the next six points to take a lead they would not give up. NU got within one point at 16-15 but got no closer in a 25-20 QU win. Quincy had its best hitting set of the match in the third, ending at .394 (14-1-33). Northwood had a .188 percentage in the set (16-7-48).
  • Quincy started the final set fast, putting up five of the first six points. NU eventually tied the score at 10-10, but an 8-2 push from Quincy gave QU an 18-12 edge. Northwood got no closer than two the remainder of the way. The Hawks hit .267 in the final set (11-3-30) and held the Timberwolves to a .146 (14-8-41).

INSIDE THE MATCH - WALSH

  • After Walsh jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the match, Northwood responded with five straight points to level the score at 6-6. The Cavaliers appeared on their way to an easy set win, leading 19-12. NU fought back, however, going on a 7-1 run late to tie the score at 23-23. WU bounced back again, scoring the final two points to win the first set 26-24. Neither team hit well in the opener – Walsh finished at .082 (13-9-49), while Northwood hit .000 (9-9-48).
  • The second set started in similar fashion to the first – Walsh led 5-1 to start only to see the Timberwolves come back to tie the score at 6-6. While the remainder of the set was close, it appeared NU would get on the board with a set point at 24-23. The Cavs controlled the play the remainder of the way, however, scoring four of the final five points to win 27-25 to go up 2-0. Both team were much better offensively in the second, as the Cavaliers hit .257 (15-6-35) compared to the Timberwolves at .275 (16-5-40).
  • Much like the first two sets, the finale was tightly contested as well. Up to Northwood leading 17-15, the largest lead for either team was three points. That is when the Cavaliers took over, going on a 7-1 run to lead 22-18. The Cavaliers eventually finished the sweep at 25-22. Walsh ended the final set at .224 (16-5-49) while holding Northwood to a .136 mark (16-8-59).
