Volleyball Goes 1-1 To Open Season At Clarion

OVERVIEW – FAYETTEVILLE STATE/CLARION

SCORE: Northwood Timberwolves 3, Fayetteville State Broncos 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-12) / Northwood 3, Clarion Golden Eagles 0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-19)

RECAP: Northwood Volleyball open season with a pair of matches at the Tony Banner Invitational, defeating Fayetteville State 3-0 before falling 3-0 against host Clarion Friday (August 26).

INSIDE THE MATCH - FAYETTEVILLE STATE

  • Northwood started the opening set strong, scoring seven of the first nine points. Fayetteville State responded with a run of their own, going on a 11-2 run to take an 13-9 lead. The Timberwolves came right back, using a 14-1 burst to take a 23-14 lead. The Broncos made one last push before NU finished off a 25-19 opening set victory.
  • The second set started in a very similar fashion to the first, as the Timberwolves scored eight of the first 10 points for the early advantage. FSU then scored six straight points to make it 8-8. With the score 11-11, NU took control of the set, going on a 12-4 run to go up 23-15. Northwood eventually took the set 25-17 to go up 2-0 in the match.
  • The Timberwolves led throughout the third set. NU jumped out to a 7-2 lead early and did not allow the Broncos to get any closer than four points the rest of the way as Northwood took the final set 25-12. NU's 13-point lead at the end was its biggest of the set.

  • With the score tied 9-9, the Golden Eagles took control of the opening set. Clarion scored six of the next seven points and did not allow Northwood to get any closer than four the remainder of the way. CU's 25-16 lead at the end of the set was its biggest of the opening frame.
  • The Golden Eagles set the tone for the second set right away, going up 13-3 early in the set. Clarion led by as many as 14 points times, including the final margin of 25-11.
  • Clarion once again got off to a fast start in the third, scoring 10 of the first 12 points.  CU opened the lead to as many as 10 (15-5) before Northwood chipped away at the lead. NU eventually got within three at 22-19 before the Golden Eagles earned the final three points to complete the sweep 25-19.
