Volleyball Goes 1-1 For The Second Straight Day At Clarion

RECAP: Northwood Volleyball wrapped up play by going 1-1 at the Tony Banner Invitational Saturday afternoon (August 27), dropping a 3-0 match to Palm Beach Atlantic before earning a 3-0 win against Shippensburg.

INSIDE THE MATCH - PALM BEACH ATLANTIC

  • The opening set started evenly, with PBA holding a 7-6 lead. With the Palm Beach Atlantic lead standing at 15-12, the Sailfish earned five of the next six points to go up 20-13. Northwood then saw PBA earn the final five points to close out a 25-15 opening set victory.
  • Northwood started the second set strong, claiming six straight points early to go up 6-3. NU eventually led 10-9, only to see the Sailfish go on a 5-0 push to take a 14-10 lead. The Timberwolves bounced right back with five of the next six points to tie the score at 15-15, only to see PBA run off 10 of the final 13 points to earn a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 second set win.
  • The Timberwolves held a 10-9 lead in the third set when Palm Beach Atlantic used another big run to close out the match. The Sailfish scored the next eight points and 11 of the next 13 points to go up 20-12 on their way to a 25-18 to finish the sweep.

INSIDE THE MATCH - SHIPPENSBURG

  • The start of the match was evenly played, as the first three-point lead of the match did not come until NU went up 9-6. The Timberwolves eventually led 15-11, but the Raiders responded with an 8-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. Northwood came right back with a run of their own, scoring nine of the final 11 points to earn the opening set 25-21.
  • The Timberwolves kept the momentum going early in the second, scoring the opening three points and five of the first seven overall. Shippensburg came back to tie the set 11-11 when Northwood went on the key run of the set, scoring five straight points to go up 16-11. The Raiders got no closer than three points the rest of the way, as the Timberwolves earn the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Northwood led the third set early 9-4, but the Raiders responded. Shippensburg put up a 9-2 run to go up 13-11. The Timberwolves came right back with a run of their own, earning the next eight points to go up 19-13. The Raiders did not go away, however, fighting back to get within one at 22-21.  Northwood appeared ready to close the match out with a 24-21 lead, only to see Shippensburg earn three straight points to level the set at 24-24. The Timberwolves finished off the hard-fought set with the final two points to earn the sweep with a 26-24 win.
