Volleyball Drops Pair At Wayne State

OVERVIEW – QUINCY/WAYNE STATE

SCORE: Quincy Hawks 3, Northwood Timberwolves 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-17)/Wayne State Warriors 3, Northwood 2 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 16-14)

RECAP:  Volleyball drops a pair of matches at the Warrior Invitational Saturday (September 3), falling 3-0 to Quincy before losing a tough 3-2 match against host Wayne State.

INSIDE THE MATCH - QUINCY

  • The first set was close early as both teams made small runs. The Hawks then used an 8-2 run to take a 21-12 advantage. Quincy never looked back as they went on to win the first set 25-13 to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Northwood and Quincy went back and forth in the beginning of the set. QU held a 14-10 before NU battled back to tie the score at 15-15. The Hawks used a big 10-2 run to end the set, scoring the final eight points as the Timberwolves fell 25-17 in the second.
  • The third set was much of the same for the Timberwolves. The two teams battled early throughout most of the set. Tied 16-16 deep into the set, the Hawks broke away to score nine of the next ten points to win the third set 25-17 and win the match 3-0.

INSIDE THE MATCH – WAYNE STATE

  • The first set was tied 14-14 when the Warriors made a push to go up 20-15. Northwood responded with seven of the next nine points to level the score at 22-22. WSU finished the set strong, scoring the final three points to win 25-22.
  • Northwood started to come back right away in the third, scoring seven of the first 10, eight of the first 12 and 17 of the first 26 points. The Warriors fought back to get with three late, but the Timberwolves held on for a 25-22 win to cut the deficit to two sets to one.
  • WSU led for the majority of the fourth, with their biggest advantage standing at 17-11. NU responded with a big run, putting up 11 of the next 14 points to go up 22-20. Northwood eventually took the set 25-23 to send the match to the fifth.
  • The Timberwolves appeared ready to complete the comeback win, starting the fifth set fast. Northwood led 11-5 when Wayne State finished strong. WSU scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the score. Northwood had a match point at 14-13, but the Warriors earned the final three points of the match to take the fifth 16-14.
