RECAP: Without starting setter Renee Brines, Northwood volleyball falls in straight sets to Grand Valley State and Lewis on day one of the Midwest Region Crossover Friday (October 13).

INSIDE THE MATCH – GRAND VALLEY STATE

  • Northwood was without injured setter Renee Brines, who had been on the floor for every point up to now this season.
  • GVSU started the opening set with five straight points for the early advantage. The Timberwolves fought back to tie the score 11-11, only to see the Lakers score six of the next seven points to lead 17-12. Grand Valley State eventually led 24-17 when Northwood put up five straight points to make the score 24-22. The Lakers then finished off the set 25-22.
  • Set two was tied 8-8 when the Lakers scored seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead. The Timberwolves got no closer than six points the rest of the set, which was eventually won by GVSU 25-16.
  • Grand Valley State set the tone for the final set right away, scoring six of the first seven points. The Lakers finished the match on a 11-2 run to finished the sweep with a 25-10 third-set win.

INSIDE THE MATCH – LEWIS

  • Lewis started the match fast, scoring eight of the first 10 points. The Flyers maintained their advantage the rest of the way, not allowing Northwood to get any closer than four. Lewis eventually took the set 25-18 for a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second set, the score was tied 3-3 when the Flyers went on a 10-0 run to go up 13-3. The Flyers led by as many as 14 three times in the set, including at the end when LU took the set 25-11 for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Lewis took over in the final set with the score 10-9. The Flyers scored six of the next seven points to go up 16-10. LU then finished the match on an 8-3 run to close the match out at 25-15 for a 3-0 sweep.
