David Shumaker was named the fifth volleyball coach in the 34-year history of Northwood volleyball in December of 2015.

He enters the 2022 season with a record of 62-89 at Northwood and 408-280 over the course of his 20-year coaching career.

Northwood posted an 11-15 record in 2021, going 4-10 in the GLIAC. Maya Ferland earned All-GLIAC honors at the conclusion of the season.

The spring 2021 season was a major breakthrough for the Timberwolves, going 9-6 overall and 8-4 in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves placed three student-athletes on the All-GLIAC team, led by First Team honoree Mary Gallagher. 

The Timberwolves finished the 2017 season with a 14-13 overall record, marking the first time since 2013 the team ended wtih a winning record.

Shumaker comes to Northwood after a highly-successful stint as the head coach at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. He posted a 137-55 record (.714) in that time while winning four straight Appalachian Athletic Conference championships. A two-time AAC Coach of the Year (2012, 2013), Shumaker led Bryan at least 20 wins in all five seasons. The 2013 team posted a program-best record of 33-4, which earned Shumaker the AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year award.

Prior to his time at Bryan, Shumaker spent 10 seasons at Summit University in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He posted a 209-136 record at Summit while serving as a full-time professor. Shumaker led the team to a runner-up finish in the NCCAA in 2005. He then led the transition for the program going from the NCCAA to NCAA Division III. During his time at Bryan, Shumaker was named the National Coach of the Year in 2003 and the Regional Coach of the Year three times.

Shumaker and his wife Joanna have two children: Drew and Danielle.
