Cross Country Hosts GLIAC Championships

The Northwood University cross country teams hosted the 2012 Men's and Women's GLIAC Championships Saturday morning (October 20).

The event was held at the Maple Leaf Golf Course in Linwood.

The women's race was the opening event of the day, which was won by Grand Valley State with a team score of 25. The Lakers claimed their 13th straight conference title thanks to placing four runners in the top six, including the GLIAC Athlete of the Year in Allyson Winchester. GVSU also earned the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award (Jessica Janecke) and the GLIAC Coach of the Year honor (Jerry Baltes). In all, the Lakers placed all seven of their competitors in the race on the All-GLIAC teams. Northwood finished ninth overall with 225 points. The Timberwolves were 11th last year with 303 points. Danielle Miller (Clinton Twp., Mich./Fraser) led the way for Northwood, placing 24th overall on the 6K course with a time of 22:20.1.

GVSU also earned the victory on the men's side with a team score of 29. It is the 11th straight GLIAC Championship for the Lakers. Grand Valley State's Stephen Fuelling was named the GLIAC Athlete of the Year, while Baltes was also named the Men's Coach of the Year. Freshman of the Year honors went to Malone's Ryan Roush. Northwood placed 12th in the men's race with a score of 330. Enock Rono (Eldoret, Kenya) was the top finisher for the Timberwolves, clocking a 25:27.0 on the 8K course.
