Baseball Splits Pair Versus Illinois-Springfield

The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of games versus Illinois-Springfield Saturday afternoon (March 1). UIS won game one 11-4 before Northwood posted a 12-3 win in game two.

Northwood finishes the weekend series against the Prairie Stars 1-2.

UIS got off to a fast start in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning. NU responded with two runs in the second to make the score 3-2. The score was 6-4 heading into the eighth inning when the Prairie Stars plated five runs to put the game away. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had a home run, two hits and an RBI in the game. Seniors Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair) each had their first career home runs. Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Alberta/Thompson Rivers U.) came in relief in the game and tossed 3 2/3 shutout innings, striking out six.

Springfield was up 2-1 in the nightcap after one inning when the Timberwolves broke through in the second inning, plating six runs. Northwood extended their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning and then made it 11-3 in the sixth. The Timberwolves rounded out the scoring with one run in the seventh. Matt Theiss (Midland, Mich.) picked up his first career win on the mound, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks in six innings of work. Lee had a hit and three runs scored, while Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) added two hits and three RBI's. Altman finished with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Northwood will face Gannon in Florida for a doubleheader March 7. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
