Baseball Splits Pair Versus Alderson-Broaddus

The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of games in Florida versus Alderson-Broaddus Saturday afternoon (March 8). The Timberwolves earned a 10-6 win in game win before the Battlers posted a 6-1 victory in game two.

Both teams are now 4-3 on the season.

Alderson-Broaddus got off to a strong start in game one, plating two runs in the first and four more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. The score remained that way until the fifth inning when the Timberwolves came to life. NU scored two in the fifth, six in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the win. Northwood finished the game with 12 hits while drawing eight walks. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) went 2-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) added a pair of hits and three runs scored. Freshman Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) tossed two shutout innings in relief to pick up his first career win. Senior Jordan Schwellenbach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) got the final three outs, earning a save.

The Battlers scored in the first inning of game two and would lead the rest of the way. ABU would go on to score two in the second and two in the sixth to go up 5-0. Northwood plated their lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) RBI single. Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Alberta/Thompson Rivers U.) allowed three runs while striking out six in five innings of work.

Northwood will play one game against Minnesota State Mankato Sunday (March 9). Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
