Softball Opens Season With Pair of Victories

The Northwood University softball team opened their 2014 season with a pair of wins at the Charger Chillout Friday afternoon (February 7). The Timberwolves earned a 7-2 win over St. Joseph's before downing Maryville 6-1.

The event is being hosted by Alabama Huntsville.

NORTHWOOD 7, ST. JOSEPH'S 2

Northwood got off to a good start to open the season, plating a pair of runs on a Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini) to go up 2-0 in the top of the first. The Pumas responded with a pair of runs in the first in the bottom of the inning. The Timberwolves responded with what proved to be the winning runs of the game in the third, thanks to a two-run homer by Lindsay Obremski (DuBois, Pa.). Northwood then plated three runs in the fourth to put the game away, with Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King) picking up RBI's.

After allowing two runs on three hits in the first inning, Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) settled down to earn the win.  She held the Pumas off the board over the final six innings, finishing the game allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.

NORTHWOOD 6, MARYVILLE 1

Maryville took an early lead against the Timberwolves with a run in the first inning. Northwood got on the board in the third inning on another Zaborowski two-run homer. NU then plated three more runs in the fourth, which was capped by a Klonowski run-scoring triple.  The Timberwolves capped the scoring on a Malinda Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) RBI single.

Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits while striking out seven.

Northwood will take on Southern Indiana and Indianapolis Saturday (February 8). Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
